About Us

We are at the nexus of history, storytelling and media. Our calling is to help organisations, businesses and individuals capture and communicate their story.

We do this because we believe that only deeper understanding of our pasts – be they individual or collective – can we better tackle today’s challenges and seize tomorrow’s opportunities.

Why choose us

Here are three important reasons:

Collaboration is a cornerstone of Retrospect’s approach to projects.
We start off by listening to you; what form your story might take, who
your audience is and how you’ll be sharing it with the world.

Crafting a history isn’t just about words and research. It’s also about deadlines, project management and keeping to budgets. We understand milestones and costs need to be met – and we’re committed to doing that.

In case you didn’t get it already – we love history. And we care about making it interesting, accessible and meaningful for everyone. Our focus is on making sure your story will be read, enjoyed and shared widely.

Founder and Lead Storyteller

Dr Dashiel Lawrence brings more than 13 years’ experience as a storyteller, historian, researcher and project manager, working in the public and private sector. His career began creating local stories across regional NSW and Victoria for ABC Local Radio. An abiding love of history and research saw Dash return to the University of Melbourne in 2011, where he completed a PhD in the university’s School of Historical and Philosophical Studies.

Dash has continued to create content and research (books, articles, short film, podcasts) for both academic and general audiences. He has also enjoyed several years in private consulting; advising state and local government across Australia on community engagement and public consultation projects. Now, he brings those experiences and interests to Retrospect.

Dash is a member of the Professional Historians Association (Victoria & Tasmania), Professional Historians Australia and the Oral History Association of Australia (OHAA).

Our Collaborators

We collaborate with a network of accomplished creatives, historians and other freelancers. Our partners offer expertise in everything from book printing and binding, graphic design to website development and videography. They’re experienced, skilled and most importantly, trusted.
